I love creating a reading list at the start of each season, but autumn is by far my favourite time to dive into a stack of great books. As Halloween approaches, my taste shifts towards the slightly spookier and more thrilling reads-perfect for the season's eerie vibe (and because I'm a spooky babe at heart). Here’s what I’ve lined up to read with the blurbs:
Blue Sisters by Coco Mellors is a story about the complex and turbulent bond between two sisters, who navigate their shared history, personal secrets, and deep emotional scars. As they struggle with their own lives and relationships, the novel delves into themes of love, loss, and the enduring connection that ties them together despite the challenges they face.
I loved Cleopatra & Frankenstein by the same author, so really looking forward to reading this.
We Solve Murders by Richard Osman is a clever and engaging mystery where a group of unlikely amateur detectives, each with their own quirks and secrets, come together to solve complex crimes. As they unravel clues and navigate twists and turns, the story blends humour, suspense, and heart, making it a delightful read for mystery lovers.
A light-hearted murder mystery vibe - perfect for the Autumn season.
We follow Lydia, a young half-human, half-vampire woman navigating the complexities of modern life while grappling with her hunger for human blood. As she struggles with her identity, loneliness, and the desire to live a normal life, the novel explores themes of belonging, cultural identity, and the challenges of balancing her dual nature.
A fresh new and thought-provoking take on the vampire genre.
A psychological thriller that centres on Marisa, a woman who seems to have the perfect life with her partner, Jake, until their new lodger, Kate, moves in. As Kate becomes increasingly intrusive, Marisa begins to feel unsettled, questioning the true intentions of those around her. The novel delves into themes of obsession, trust, and the dark undercurrents that can lurk beneath the surface of seemingly perfect lives.
My only domestic thriller of this list - I'm not usually a fan of domestic thrillers but i've heard great things about Elizabeth Day.
Graveyard Shift by M.L. Rio is a suspenseful novel that follows a group of friends working the night shift at a cemetery. As they face eerie and unexplained occurrences, the boundary between the living and the dead begins to blur. Tensions rise as secrets from their pasts emerge, and they must confront both supernatural forces and their own demons to survive the night.
Sounds a bit more spooky and I love scaring myself silly from time to time.
A psychological horror about a family shattered when their teenage daughter, Marjorie, shows signs of possession. As they turn to reality TV for help, the line between mental illness and the supernatural blurs. Years later, Marjorie's younger sister revisits the events, questioning what truly happened.
Horror and reality TV?! - yes please!
A novel set in the late 1960s, focusing on Evie, a lonely teenager who becomes captivated by a group of free-spirited girls led by an enigmatic cult leader. Drawn into their world, Evie’s infatuation leads her down a dark and dangerous path. The novel explores themes of adolescence, obsession, and the allure of belonging, all set against the backdrop of a chilling, Manson-like cult.
Give me anything cult-ish and I will lap it up babes.
What's on your reading list? Let me know. I love a good book rec.
Hope you are having a gentle start to September and I will see you all very soon :)
