My Habits + Routines for Winter

I’ve been feeling a bit run down lately-catching colds, feeling stuck in a funk, and just not quite myself. Honestly,Winter is always tough on me, but my yoga practice has been a real haven during this time. It feels so good to show up for myself, even in small ways, and it reminds me I’m worth the effort.

When I’m heading toward burnout or feeling unwell, I notice the signs: styes on my eyes, irritability, and that 'wired but tired' feeling. Life as a business owner and human means some of this is unavoidable (and yes, a cheeky takeaway is still heaven during the week). But I want to focus on routines that truly help me feel my best.

To keep things simple, I’ve created day + evening habits as anchors at both ends of my day. Even if the middle gets messy, these habits help me reset. Here’s what I’m leaning into:

Day

  • Open the curtains to let the light in.

  • Crack a window for a bit of fresh air, even if it’s chilly.

  • Make the bed.

  • Drink a glass of water.

  • Take three deep breaths.

  • Go for a walk with Dexter (even if it’s short).

  • Get into something cosy for the day.

  • Enjoy a warming breakfast.

  • Start work, either at home or out of the house. Or if I feel particularly rotten, then spend a couple pf hours being gentle with myself. Let go of the need for doing what you 'should' be doing and allow yourself to give yourself what you 'need'.

Evening

  • Turn on cosy lighting (no overhead lights here!).

  • Do abhyanga (Ayurvedic self-massage) with sesame oil—every single day.

  • Take a bath or shower with deep breathing.

  • Follow up with skincare and body oil.

  • Put on warm pyjamas fresh off the radiator.

  • Make a cup of tea or hot cocoa.

  • Roll out my mat for some gentle stretches or meditation.

  • Enjoy my tea with something homemade while watching something cosy or getting crafty (crocheting, making Christmas decorations/cards).

  • Brush teeth and floss (when I remember).

  • Read in bed before falling asleep (currently loving Jamaica Inn by Daphne Du Maurier).

These routines feel grounding and nurturing, and I’d love to hear what habits help you feel good during this season. What’s on your winter wellness list? Let me know in the comments!
